    Photo-walk Oughton Head and Common

    10:15Swinburne Avenue Sports Pitch

Oughtonhead Common offers: 6 long horned cattle (very docile); a chalk stream the River Oughton, very clear with the head of the river visible and a large pool; reed beds; hedgerows full of sloes; beech tree copse; carved wooden arch in memory of a volunteer warden; boardwalks; the slim chance of seeing little egrets and even slimmer a kingfisher (nothing like the bird variety of Fairlands).

    2 hours max,

We meet at 10.15 at the Sports Pitches off Swinburne Road

Turn Off Bedford Road into Burford Way and follow up into Swinburne Avenue, a good half mile.

    Simon 3

Turn right into the cul de sac opposite two white garages (on your left) numbers 67 and 69.

    Simon 4

Cul de Sac has a large hedge and green electricity box on the right side of the entrance, large visible tree at the end. This leads you to a small parking area where we cross the sports pitches to the Nature Reserve.

    Simon 2

Parking area may be full so if it is you’ll have to park in the cul de sac (carefully not to block anyone’s entrance - residents get fed up if this happens) or back on Swinburne Avenue.

I’m suggesting that we retire afterwards to the Plume and Feathers, Ickleford. Go back to the Bedford Road, turn left then right at the roundabout a little further along (Turnpike Lane) then straight into the village. The pub is after the church, Chambers Lane, Upper Green. Lots of parking at the rear of the pub.
