Oughtonhead Common offers: 6 long horned cattle (very docile); a chalk stream the River Oughton, very clear with the head of the river visible and a large pool; reed beds; hedgerows full of sloes; beech tree copse; carved wooden arch in memory of a volunteer warden; boardwalks; the slim chance of seeing little egrets and even slimmer a kingfisher (nothing like the bird variety of Fairlands).
2 hours max,
We meet at 10.15 at the Sports Pitches off Swinburne Road
Turn Off Bedford Road into Burford Way and follow up into Swinburne Avenue, a good half mile.
I’m suggesting that we retire afterwards to the Plume and Feathers, Ickleford. Go back to the Bedford Road, turn left then right at the roundabout a little further along (Turnpike Lane) then straight into the village. The pub is after the church, Chambers Lane, Upper Green. Lots of parking at the rear of the pub.
